Tim Bray to Ditch Apple Platform, Go Linux

perl6 howto in ubuntu dapper

I will present an small howto compile and install perl6 and parrotvm on an ubuntu dapper

machine. I followed this howto with small corrections when the build/install went astray

http://dresden-pm.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/PM/PugsFirstBloodEnglish
Check out the current parrot source tree

svn co https://svn.perl.org/parrot/trunk parrot

cd parrot

Try to run configure script to see what is missing

perl Configure.pl --prefix=/opt/parrot

In my case it died at some step

step auto::gcc died during execution: Linker failed (see test.ldo) at lib/Parrot/Configure/Step.pm line 365
Parrot::Configure::Step::cc_build() called at config/auto/gcc.pm line 36

auto::gcc::runstep('auto::gcc=HASH(0x83a1018)',
'Parrot::Configure=HASH(0x826970c)') called at lib/Parrot/Configure.pm
line 239
eval {...} called at lib/Parrot/Configure.pm line 235
Parrot::Configure::runsteps('Parrot::Configure=HASH(0x826970c)') called at Configure.pl line 443

It was an fuzzy error so i read that i need the Haskel compiler ,Let's try it

sudo apt-get install ghc6

Then I looked in the test.ldo content

view test.ldo

There is light now in my head aha no c++ file so i created the symlink

sudo ln -s /usr/bin/g++ /usr/bin/c++

I rerun the configure script

perl Configure.pl --prefix=/opt/parrot

All was ok so i installed the parrotVM

sudo make install

It's time now for perl6 compiler (aka pugs)

svn co http://svn.perl.org/perl6/pugs/trunk pugs

cd pugs

You need some devel libraries and some environment variables

sudo apt-get install zlib1g-dev libperl-dev

export PUGS_EMBED="perl5 parrot"

export PARROT_PATH=${HOME}/path/to/src/parrot/

perl Makefile.PL

time make

this can be used as cpu burn benchmark
real 64m59.178s
user 31m25.294s
sys 0m54.823s

sudo make install

pugs -e '"What say you?".say;'

ps: there is now an list for perl6.users
I tried to write the goodbye world example this way but didn't worked yet

pugs -e ' "What".say."You";'
***
unexpected "\""
expecting ".", subroutine name, array subscript, hash subscript or code subscript
at -e line 1, column 13

TFMail secure replacement for formmail - I needed a good replacement for formmail and found nms-scripts
nms FormMail is a drop-in replacement for Matt Wright's FormMail scrip
is recomended on the Matt Wright's scripts page as an secure and better written FormMail script

But what i will test today is something new TFMail (improved Form Mail) With that script page/encoding for text message can use UTF-8 for form fields and there are more options in the configuration area.
http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/tfmail.tar.gz

tar -zxvf tfmail.tar.gz

cd tfmail

vi .htaccess
Order Deny,Allow
Deny from all

copy the file TFmail.pl into your cgi-bin
directory.

cp TFmail.pl ../

vi default.trc
complete the recipient field with your email address

cd ../

change the LIBDIR, CONFIG_ROOT
In my case was '/example/cgi-bin/tfmail'

MAILPROG '/usr/sbin/sendmail -oi -t'

chown apache.apache TFmail.pl (in case you run it with suexec under apache or nobody user)

create an html form like for the formmail script (without recipient field)

contact.html
< action="http://www.example.com/cgi-bin/TFmail.pl" method="POST" name="test">

< type="text" name="contact" size="40">

Test the contact script www.example.com/contact.html

Installing oracle on Ubuntu breezy (AMD64)

Installing oracle on Ubuntu breezy (AMD64)
Because it is an server machine (opteron) i had to install the Ubuntu Server version
and for Oracle i needed ot install desktop packages (needed for oracle java installer ) also Xforwarding must be enabled in sshd_conf

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
ssh -X 192.168.x.x

Then I followed this installation guide

All was ok until this error showed up in console
All installer requirements met.

Preparing to launch Oracle Universal Installer from /tmp/OraInstall2006-03-21_01-41-37PM. Please wait ...oracle@harvey:~/database$ Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: /tmp/OraInstall2006-03-21_01-41-37PM/jre/1.4.2/lib/i386/libawt.so: libXp.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Solution : i have installed the libXp* from my 32bit dapper box (you can copy from one breezy installed box)
cd /usr/lib
scp libXp* root@192.168.x.x:/usr/lib32/

Then i hit an java bug related to "locale" setting .

current locale is not supported in X11, locale is set to CX locale modifiers are not supported, using defaultException in thread "main" java.lang.InternalError: Current locale is not supported

Did a little of googling and i
found another thread with solution to start 32 bit apps that solved my java "locale" problem

install linux32 package : sudo apt-get install linux32 then as
oracle user (you have to be login as oracle user)

export XLOCALELIBDIR=/usr/lib32/X11/locale
linux32 sh runInstaller

Here is the oracle happy exit

We got some opencms mysql dump (from an windows machine) and all tables
are created with Uppercase Chars but on our db server (debian stable ) mysql creates
al database files (thouse under /var/lib/mysql/exampledb ) with small chars
So i wrote 2 scripts for converting the files

#cd /var/lib/mysql/exampledb

create an script with this content

cat upercase.sh
#!/bin/bash
for i in *.myi *.frm *.myd
do
echo $i
mv $i `echo $i | tr "[a-z]" "[A-Z]"`
done
run it

sh upercase.sh

then create another perl script
#vi rename.pl

with this content
#!/usr/bin/perl
foreach $name ( @ARGV ) {
@splitedname = split(/\./, $name);
#print "@splitedname\n";
$filename = $splitedname[0];
$extension = "frm";
$newname = "$filename.$extension";
# $newname =~ tr/A-Z/a-z/;
print "$name becomes $newname\n";
rename ($name, $newname) if ($newname ne $name );
}
and run it

#perl rename.pl *.FRM

ps: it was wrote in rush so i know it can be done better :)

What is make
